A lung function test, also known as pulmonary function testing (PFT), is a diagnostic procedure used to assess how well a person's lungs are functioning. It measures various aspects of lung capacity, airflow, and gas exchange. Common tests include spirometry, which measures the amount and speed of air that can be inhaled and exhaled, and lung volume tests, which determine the total volume of air in the lungs and how effectively air moves in and out.
These tests help diagnose conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary fibrosis. Patients may undergo lung function testing if they experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, or if they have risk factors for lung disease such as smoking, exposure to environmental pollutants, or a family history of respiratory conditions.
